What is Shorter Address?

The address which is required to be disclosed on the product packages is Complete Postal Address. However, when you find your address is too long and difficult to accommodate on the product package then you can apply for shorter address registration to the Director or the Controller, depending on your registration – “Central registration” or “State registration”.

The Director or the Controller may if he is satisfied after an inquiry that the shorter address is sufficient to enable the consumer or any other person to identify the manufacturer or the packer, register such shorter address.

Where a shorter address is registered by the Director or the Controller, it shall be lawful for the manufacturer or packer to state such shorter address on the label of each commodity pre-packed by him or it.

The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011

Provision of shorter address on the product packages are regulated by the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 read with Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
