When you feel that your invention has reached a stage where you can disclose it on paper, then you may apply for a provisional patent with provisional specifications. Provisional patent increases the chance of obtaining patent registration. A provisional patent is draft specification filed mainly to secure a priority date over any other application which could be filed in respect of the same invention.  By filing provisional patent application you can restrict your competitors.

A provisional patent application has 12 months potency period from the date of filing after which the applicant has to file the complete specification. If the complete specification not filed within 12 months, the provisional patent application is considered “abandoned”.
